Most Al-Anon Family Groups meetings are topic discussion meetings. This means the person who is leading the meeting, the chairperson, chooses a topic related to the experience of dealing with a friend or family member who has a problem with alcoholism. Over the years, as I put the principles of the Al-Anon program to work in my life, I found that what it helped me do most was keep things simple.
If you expect nothing from them you cant be disappointed when you dont get it. If you love an alcoholic or drug addict, you may find help in this collection of AA, Alateen and Al-Anon books you can read at home. In this half hour sometimes I will think of God, so as to get a little more perspective into my life. It fades away for both my AH and myself.
I always bring along a book for topics when I chair a meeting, usually The Language Of Letting Go by Melody Beattie, but if you need "approved" material I'm sure Courage To Change would be a logical choice. I am new here, and do not yet have as much "inner strenght" as most of you. I can do things for twelve hours that would appall me if I had to keep them up for a lifetime. Maybe I am just too hurt, and too angry to understand the severity of alcoholism. My homegroup always reads form a daily reader at the beginning of the meeting, and yesterday someone read that. Not only was I disappointed that he never followed through on anything but, he was constantly disappointed that he couldn't be sober long enough to give me - and him - what was needed.
I've also found that it often gets things going well to sometimes take a "devils advocate" approach, like with the ODAT passage for yesterday about "forgetting" the past. I've learned to not set any expectations (other than the usual and customary ones. If so, learn how you can get help dealing with the situation. It's so hard dealing with pain especially when you don't get any support from the person who your supposed to be closest to. It’s a large group and a mix of long time members, members with a few years to a couple of new combers. Jan is Alateen and March is Al-Anon and Institutions in San Francisco. I don’t know why I wrestled with picking a topic. I guess there are so many it was hard making a choice of just one. I have a few people who are my hardware store that I keep trying to get bread from. I have signed up to lead a meeting and pick a topic to discuss.

I know a large part of what makes a meeting good is the people who go, and we have a great group - I wouldn't have made it my home group otherwise. Leslee, I dont think alanon doesnt want you to hold the alcoholic responsible, I think the point is dont hold yourself responsible for their actions. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it.
